Outdoor Sports

Park Rapids plays host to a lot of outdoor sports enthusiasts.

Fishermen are able to reel in several species of fish including walleye, muskie, northern lake trout and pan fish such as blue gill, sunny, crappie and perch that populate more than 400 lakes, streams and rivers within a 25 mile radius.

Thousands of deer hunters populate the Park Rapids area for the opening of rifle season in November. Hunters are also experiencing success during archery and muzzleloader seasons. Waterfowl, birds and other types of large and small game hunting is a large draw to the Park Rapids area.

Trails upon trails that are beautifully groomed await persons wanting to snowmobile hundreds of miles in pristine woodland settings. Visit www.forestriderstrailclub.com or www.nevismn.com/trailblazers

ATV riders enjoy hundreds of miles of trails in the Park Rapids Lakes Area, bringing them closer to nature’s beauty in remote areas others often don’t see. Local clubs maintain two primary trails in our area, which are connected with more miles of trails along county highways and byways. Visit www.forestriderstrailclub.com

Not into motorized trail use? No problem. Hikers and bikers alike will marvel at the Heartland State Trail which was one of the first rail-to-trail projects in the country. It is a 49 mile multiple use trail between Park Rapids and Cass Lake. The trail is located entirely on a level abandoned railroad grade except for a four mile segment north of Walker, on sharply rolling terrain. The 27 mile segment between Park Rapids and Walker has a paved surface. There is a lot of majestic scenery along this trail that is simply breathtaking.

Lots of these outdoor activities can be enjoyed also at Itasca State Park where the Mighty Mississippi begins. Step across the headwaters of this popular river where thousands before have done that very thing. Visit www.dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/itasca
