Centrally located in the Rocky Mountains of western Montana between
Glacier National Park and
Yellowstone National
Park, Missoula, known as the Garden City, is western Montana's regional source for business, culture, medical services, retail, and entertainment. The Garden City was established in 1883 and has a city population of 53,000 people with approximately 90,000 in the county. This area of western Montana was home and hunting ground to the Salish, Pend d'Oreille, and Kootenai tribes before Lewis and Clark made their historic journey through the region in 1805.
Missoula and surrounding areas offer endless opportunities for fishing, thousands of miles of hiking/walking/biking trails, nearby lakes and rivers, city parks, and plenty of shops. Within 20 minutes of Missoula, you will find two great ski areas,
Snowbowl and
Marshall
Mountain. Missoula is also home to The University of
Montana, historic Fort
Missoula, the nationally-recognized Missoula Children's
Theatre, the International Headquarters of the Rocky Mountain Elk
Foundation, the U.S. Forest Service Smoke Jumper
Center, Southgate Mall (western Montana's largest shopping center), and
The Missoula Carousel (the only hand carved carousel built in America since the depression). In downtown Missoula you'll find many locally-owned, unique shops, numerous coffee houses and historic bars. During the summer months, take in the Farmers' Market and the Peoples' Market. Missoula also offers symphony performances, concerts, a county fair, sporting events and dozens of restaurants.
Come to beautiful Missoula, Montana, and you'll see why we're called the "big sky country."
